| | The UCLA Center for Jewish Studies | In 1933, at the beginning of the National Socialist regime, Germany counted some 500,000 Jews. In 1946/47, three years after Germany had been declared judenrein, at least a quarter million Jews, survivors of the Final Solution-a small remnant of German Jews and over 200,000 East European Jewish "Displaced Persons"-were living in Germany, albeit on occupied and defeated territory. In the period 1945 to 1949, before the establishment of the two postwar German states, Germans and Jews lived, as is often remarked, in different worlds on the same terrain, divided by memory and experience. But they also continually interacted as they negotiated the nitty-gritty of everyday life-from the black market to medical and child care-and confronted questions of relative victimization, guilt and responsibility, revenge, and possible futures. The lecture examines these complicated and yet commonplace encounters, and their gendered component, in the years immediately after the war and Holocaust. | 314 ROYCE HALL | | | http:// www.cjs.ucla.edu/events/Flyers/1939_Grossmann.pdf |
 | | Mishpacha, Hillel at UCLA | We will be serving a FREE kosher dinner at 6pm, followed by a screening of the film Yidl Mitn Fidl (translated literally from Yiddish: Little Jew with a Fiddle) at 7pm. Yidl Mitn Fidl is a movie about a young woman (Molly Picon) who poses as a man in order to join a band of musicians traveling the Polish countryside. She falls in love with one of her colleagues with delightfully humorous results. Basically, it's a film that not only deals with unusually progressive gender and sexuality issues (considering it was made in the 1930s!), but it's also adorable and downright hilarious! It is in Yiddish with English subtitles. So come on, how often do you get to hear Yiddish spoken fluently while watching a gender-bending movie and eating a free dinner? | UCLA Hillel building | | | http://www.mishpacha.net |

| | JCC at Milken | SPEAKERS: Father Greg Boyle Jesuit Priest and Founder of Homeboy Industries He’s been nearly killed in full-blown street gun battles, burying 113 young men and women, most of whom he knew well, and were cut down senselessly by gang violence. In 16 years in Boyle Heights, he has put his body in harm’s way to break up gang fights, and comforted as best he could family members and friends of murdered children. Father Greg Boyle, ex-pastor of Dolores Mission Parish, will discuss the work of Homeboy Industries, an organization Boyle founded in 1992 to provide thousands of jobs and counseling services to ex-gang members who’d be otherwise unemployable. Marty Omoto Director of the California Disability Community Action Network Omoto, a one-man staff of the California Disability Community Action Network, e-mails 40,000 people across California, several times a week, with an up-to-the-minute report on state government actions affecting people with disabilities. Omoto attends countless legislative hearings where lawmakers and advocates speak in budget jargon. Then he rushes back to his office to pound out an e-mail translated into common terms. Relating disability issues to the Holocaust, Omoto will reflect on Nazi Germany as the ultimate example of a society that failed to value people with disabilities. He will weave personal stories to ignite your passion about how we and others ought to treat all members of our community. | JCC at Milken - 22622 Vanowen St., West Hills, CA 91307 | | | http://www.jccatmilken.org |
| | JCC at Milken | Speakers: Rabbi Stan Levy Over 30 years ago, attorney and Rabbi Stan Levy turned his commitment to ‘Never Forget' into action when he became one of the founders of Bet Tzedek Legal Services. Bet Tzedek pursues justice for victimized and poor Angelenos. Rabbi Levy will weave powerful personal anecdotes with sacred texts and modern philosophy as he describes how Bet Tzedek fulfills a commitment to enrich our lives by serving the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and the needs of the survivors. Mark Rothman Following Rabbi Levy's talk, Bet Tzedek Holocaust Services Advocate Mark Rothman will guide those in attendance through an exciting and compelling reparations simulation. The simulation will demonstrate the true challenges of Swiss bank accounts repayments, settlements for insurance policies purchased by murdered ancestors, slave labor compensation, and pensions for labor performed in the ghetto. This innovative, non-competitive experience demonstrates the distance between promise and payout. Finally, it will lead participants to discover how they can help fight for Holocaust restitution. | | The UCLA Center for Jewish Studies | The UCLA Center for Jewish Studies is pleased to present "Turning it over again and again": Reading Jewish Texts sponsored by The Joy and Jerry Monkarsh Family Endowment for Jewish Studies. The conference will feature papers by graduate students from a variety of disciplines with responses by faculty in related fields. For thousands of years, Jewish texts have served variously as sources of authority, inspiration, instruction and interpretation. In turn, the process of reading and re-reading these texts has played a formative role in shaping Jewish communities. This conference aims to investigate both the diverse approaches of engaging the texts and the many implications of such engagement. By opening wide the question of the complex relationship between Jewish texts and the communities that read them, we aim to foster a cross-disciplinary conversation among graduate students in and proximate to Jewish Studies (e.g., history, sociology, literature, religion, and philosophy). We also aim to foster conversation between graduate students and faculty, who will serve as respondents for the papers. The keynote speaker will be Charlotte Fonrobert, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University, whose research focuses on talmudic literature and the construction of gender in it. The conference is organized into four panels and one keynote speech on Sunday and Monday (February 13-14, 2005). A detailed conference program is available at http://www.cjs.ucla.edu/CJS_Grad_Conf.htm The conference is cosponsored by Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Davis, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of Southern California, the University of Judaism and Hebrew Union College

(please include the following information) The East-West Ensemble, founded in 1985 by Yisrael Borochov, is Israel's pioneer multi-ethnic musical ensemble and one of the first in the world. The Ensemble's work is located on the seam between well-defined musical areas; the contents and inspiration for the Ensemble's melodies and arrangements comes from a wide range of musical styles that cross intercultural borders and create a new musical environment. This is not fixed precisely on any one familiar category, but avoids innovation purely for its own sake. Instead, the Ensemble bravely attempts to find the "common denominator" between varied musical styles. Since the Ensemble boasts such a varied collection of instruments, musicians, styles and themes, they are invited to perform at many different types of music festivals throughout the world. The East-West Ensemble performs both at festivals of modern western music and progressive rock as well as at world music, ethnic music and jazz festivals. The Ensemble has appeared onstage in New York, London, Tokyo, Berlin, Barcelona, Hong Kong, New Mexico and elsewhere. It has produced three CD's: Sinai Memories (1988), Zurna (1992), and Imaginary Ritual on the Ethiopian-Persian Border (1998). The CDs were favorably reviewed by the electronic and print media, each CD hailed as a groundbreaker in multicultural music in Israel. Prizes include the prize for original creative arts at Israel's official 40th anniversary celebrations, First Prize in the Eilat Jazz Festival and the Histadrut Prize for integrating arts traditions.

| | The California Institute for Yiddish Culture & Language (CIYCL) | Documentary screenings in Yiddish and English with a presentation by filmmaker Albert Barry On Tuesday, March 22, filmmaker and photojournalist Albert Barry will present his film, "The Lost Wooden Synagogues of Eastern Europe", a documentary that traces the history of these jewel box structures and surveys those very few that still stand. Of more than a thousand that existed before the war in shtetls across Eastern Europe, only a tiny handful remain. They are boarded up, abandoned, and in hideous disrepair. Created by artists and craftsmen of the highest caliber, the hand-hewn engineering marvels boasted vaulted ceilings and intricate carvings, many dating to the 1700's. The synagogues were the centers of Jewish worship in the shtetls/rural towns from which many of our ancestors came. The Nazis reduced nearly all to ash, and what they missed was finished off by the Soviets, who converted the remaining buildings into stables and garages. This film, narrated by Theodore Bikel, tells the story of the synagogues, the life that surrounded them before the War, and what has happened to them in the last fifty years. It has won awards in five film festivals and has received rave reviews from a broad audience of critics and scholars. "Now for the first time ever, after years of research, all may soon see the wonders of a period that is gone." - The Plantation Historical Museum CIYCL is showing this historically and educationally significant film on March 22 in both its English and Yiddish versions, with Barry presenting and leading a discussion. The Yiddish version screens at 6:30 PM followed by a presentation by Albert Barry (in English) at 7:30. The English version screens at 8 PM followed by discussion. | | Keshet Chaim - (Brought to UJ by World Culture Club) | Transcend generations of Jewish thought and emotion through a mosaic of music, dance and color when Israeli singing sensation Noa Dori joins Keshet Chaim Dance Ensemble in Neshama: Stories of the Soul. For Tickets call: 818-784-0344 or 818-986-7332 or Ask Cecilia Hanono (chanono@uj.edu) for students' and groups' discounts. Neshama: Stories of the Soul celebrates the myths evoked by the city of Jerusalem for thousands of years, embracing biblical images as dramas of the soul. The full-length, multimedia performance is inspired by personal, spiritual journeys and enriched by thousands of years of Jewish legends, commentaries and religious texts. Through movement, music, song, visuals and narration, the production sweeps through the millennia, beginning before the creation of the universe and ending in the present. According to University of Judaism professor Miriyam Glazer, “For thousands of years the city of Jerusalem has been a dream, an aspiration, a source of myth, a place of pilgrimage and poetry, an ideal. To dance the story of the city is also to dance the great drama of human life.” Background: Keshet Chaim, which means “Rainbow of Life,” was established in 1983, and is considered to be the major professional American-Israeli contemporary dance troupe in the United States. The group’s repertoire is inspired by Jewish life in many lands and covers a vast span of history, from the time of Solomon and Sheba to the present. Influenced by world music, the multi-ethnic roots of the Jewish people and a constant drive for interpreting and exploring Jewish values through art, Keshet Chaim has become a pioneer in the development of Jewish dance. For the last 22 years, artistic director Eytan Avisar has developed a comprehensive and varied repertoire reflecting diverse elements of the Jewish experience, adding his own American Jewish influences to the art form. The company consists of 24 dancers from the US, Israel, Russia and South America. A combination of high-energy drama and audience-engaging performances make the company's work appealing to people of diverse backgrounds.

| | | Don't miss the unique reggae- hip hop sounds of Matisyahu! Presented by Associated Students Claremont McKenna College and Hillel at The Claremont Colleges in association with Bridges Auditorium * Tickets go on-sale to the general public on Tuesday, February 7 @ 10am through Ticketmaster and at Bridges Auditorium box office. * Tickets are available at Bridges Auditorium box office Monday thru Friday between 10am to 4pm or you may call ext 18032 (621-8032) for additional information or if you wish to purchase/charge your tickets by phone. * Bridges Auditorium (www.cuc.claremont.edu/bridges) is located at 450 N. College Way (corner of 4th Street and College Way). Bridges Auditorium is owned and operated by Claremont University Consortium (CUC) for The Claremont Colleges. About the artist: Combining the sounds of Bob Marley and Shlomo Carlebach, yet remaining wholly original, Matisyahu's performance is an uplifting, powerful experience for all in his presence. Even the most pessimistic in his audience is inspired by his ability to so honestly convey such a delicate, topic as faith/spirituality. It is his dedication to his belief and openness to others that compels one to respect his artistry and message. It's in that fleeting moment when our skepticism melts and our souls open up, that Matisyahu enters with his booming sound of faith. His new album, Youth, is a compelling mix of ancient and modern sounds and ideas. The propulsive title track, with its rallying cry "youth is the engine of the world," draws upon Matisyahu's studies of Chabad Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn – as well as his own tumultuous past. "When teenagers rebel, the reason is because there is something wrong. Not with them, but with the environment around them. That song is about making the transition from being an angry teenager, to actually becoming a grown man or a woman, changing yourself and the system around you."

| | | Sunday, December 16th at 6:00 pm Winner of the Golden Globe and an Oscar nominee in 1965, this comedy features Chaim Topol, Gila Almagor, and Arik Einstei. It is described today on the web as follows: Israeli stage and film favorite Chaim Topol tops the cast of Sallah. Topol plays a Sephardic Jewish refugee who moves his family to Israel shortly after the official establishment of that "promised land." Unlike his hard-working new neighbors, Topol is shiftless and lazy, forever finding the easiest, most painless means to support his family. Amazingly, Topol becomes a hero when, while wheeling and dealing, he uncovers misappropriations and corner-cutting in Israel's housing industry. Originally released in Israel, Salah Shabati trades on many common images of Sepharadim in Israeli culture. Join us for a discussion of these stereotypes and their continuing presence in the public discourse. | | Skirball Cultural Center | Jewish Works from His Personal Collection January 11–March 30 View more than 30 paintings and drawings from the personal collection of twentieth-century American artist R. B. Kitaj (1932–2007), one of the most celebrated and controversial artists of our time. Created in cooperation with Kitaj over the course of two years, this exhibition focuses on his intimate explorations of Jewish identity, history and culture. Several of the works have never been exhibited to the public, including the compelling Passion series (1985–1986), in which Kitaj portrays the Holocaust as a Jewish passion play, casting the chimney as an icon of Jewish suffering. Visitors will also see a series of paintings that reveal Kitaj’s shifting assessment of the relationship between Arabs and Jews over several decades, as well as works that pay homage to Jewish literary and intellectual giants such as Sigmund Freud and Franz Kafka. A number of archival materials will also be on view, including Kitaj’s correspondence with leading artists and cultural figures, philosophical musings, photographs and handwritten drafts from his two published books. $10 General $7 Seniors and Full-Time Students $5 Children 2–12 Free to Skirball Members and Children under 2 Tickets available at the door. Includes admission to all exhibitions; however, admission to Noah’s Ark and Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956–1966 requires timed-entry tickets. | | The Hayworth Theatre Hosts | The world premiere of “The Boychick Affair”, by Amy Lord, will take place on January 27th, 2008, at The Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles. In the tradition of “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” and “Grandma Sylvia’s Funeral”, this environmental comedy gives new meaning to the catch phrase ‘dysfunctional family.’ “The Boychick Affair” is a hands-on show where audience members will mingle with the actors. From Harry Boychick’s ceremony to the rompous reception afterward, the play tells the story of twenty-three different characters dealing with contemporaneous issues in a humorous way. There is dancing, fun and a celebratory meal as well. Amy Lord is the co-creator of the hit show “Grandma Sylvia’s Funeral” which is renowned for being the ‘5th longest running show off-Broadway’ and continues to enjoy audiences worldwide. Amy is wife and mother to six children. Her son Harry (not “Boychick”) will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah this January. There will be no Friday night or Saturday matinee performances in observance of the Jewish Sabbath. Sundays at 2 pm are when some of Los Angeles’ most outrageous and seasoned character actors will perform this “hysterical, touching and thoroughly enjoyable” show. The Boychick Affair premieres Sunday, January 27th, 2008, and will initially play on each subsequent Sunday indefinitely. All performances are at 2 pm. Ticket prices are $36.00 which includes a meal during the reception. There is a senior discount and group sales are available. The Boychick Affair is playing at The Hayworth Theatre, 2511 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. For reservations call Brown Paper Tickets at 800-838-3006. Group sales of 10 or more call Rosalie Lazarus at 818-986-2908. | | | | |
